Hello,
DigitalOcean is good, really good, but there is a little problem. Other VPS Services have much more Storage or even more CPU's for the same price e.g.:
DO: 8GB RAM 4Core 80GB SSD 5TB Trans. 80$
Linode: 8GB RAM 6Core 192GB SSD 8TB Trans. 80$
Vultr: 8GB RAM 4Cote 150GB SSD 5TB Trans. 80$
nice post

tested all those VPS and here you go:
Linode:- force you use their NS at DNS manager, disabled by default.
Vultr: - have tons restrictions ( like NO SMTP until you provide your credit Card and sign paperwork etc..)
DO: more freedom ( play with DNS and SMTP like with your own server)
Only one issue is data-centres are limited and not available in Canada. But hope they will fix it soon.

We have DO and Vultr. Must be honest, I prefer DO but now we had to upgrade because of space price difference is getting way out of control.
Graphs show max 30% memory use and CPU is not rising above 15%
For that we must pay $ 160/month !
Hope you will get more plans where we can go back to 8GB 4Core with 160GB Space.
And we are always willing to pay 10% more then we pay Vultr.

@Denkay - Regarding Vultr, this is becoming more common. SPAM is a major issue, especially on new accounts. SPAM becomes even more of an issue when a business throws in free credits that allow you to test the service, network, servers etc prior to any obligation (i.e. providing a credit or debit card). Numerous providers block common ports on new accounts and require that you request access. That said, there's numerous options available to get around these limitations (i.e. Mandrill, SendGrid, Mailgun - just to name a few). These options offer API's that are relatively easy to use. If you'd prefer to not have to code your own, I know all three of the providers I mentioned provide code for most common languages (PHP, Python etc - and cURL is always an option as well).

I have been a Digital Ocean customer for over a year now. I have 6 droplets. It would be nice if you could match what Linode is offering now for amount of CPU and SSD storage.

The 40$ / 4GB RAM options from various competitors include quad core CPUs, while Digital Ocean is offering only two. In order to remain as the best, you should upgrade the plan offering.

Vultr has even upped their 8GB RAM tier to 6 cores.

I've servers on linode and DO, but on DO, I use small websites
If DO comes with the same pricing plans of Linode, I'll transfer all my servers over DO

$4 VPS which has 1GB RAM, 1Core CPU, 4TB bandwidth per month, 300mbps bandwidth, 30GB space.

I use both DigitalOcean and Linode, but Linode offers 2x the cpu resources at the same price point.

Yes! SSD space is a huge problem here. I've been having to upgrade my servers purely for SSD space while the rest of my resources are sitting at very comfortable numbers.

Right now Linode is offering a $40 plan that Digitalocean offer for $80.
This is insane.
Digitalocean was the first company to offer cheap VPS and now its become one of the most expensive among cloud vps.

Note that Linode has done one of their periodic "Double the RAM at the same price" price upgrades. Linode now significantly undercuts Digital Ocean's pricing. Will Digital Ocean match prices/RAM with Linode, or will DO let Linode become the preferred provider?

$40/mo = 8gb ram - 4 cores (Linode)
$40/mo = 4gb ram - 2 cores (DO)
Sort it out... or lose market share.

Since this post DO has become even less price competitive!!!!
DO: 4GB 2 core $40
Linode: 8GB 4 core $40

DO: 4GB RAM 2 Cores $40
Linode: 8GB RAM 4 Cores $40
Twice the computing power for the same price point. Linode wins. If DO doesn't act soon... it loses!

Cloud hosting just got more competitive. Your move DO.

$10/mo = 2gb ram - 1 core (Linode)
$10/mo = 1gb ram - 1 core (DO)
If capacity was just doubled on DO, that would make it competitive.

DO has a $5 option, which does make them competitive on one front. And it seem that all Droplets have equal 10gb connections to the outside world where as Linode's connections range radically from 125mb to 100gb (?). So value must be measured by more than just RAM and core specs. I think DO's offerings are fairly competitive in the US market (not speaking for us Canadian's when the exchange rate kicks in).

One problem with just matching the competition is that then someone will increase again and DO will "no longer be competitive". It's a cat-and-mouse game. Think about iPhones.... people will say "my Android has a faster CPU and double the RAM, so it's better"... uh no... raw CPU cycles and memory capacity do not determine overall performance. The software is a huge factor in how the device's hardware performs. So for DO droplets, optimizing the software is the best way to get the most bang for your buck. I've gone from running a single virtual server with a 8 cores (impressive, right?) for $80 a month to 10 droplets @ $5 each (effectively 10 cores) for $50. More cores spread across the same number of sites for less money. So raw specs are meaningless if the software itself is not optimized for the hardware.
