Replacing all droplet types by custom droplets

For example:
+10GB hard drive = +$1/month
+1 eCPU = +$1/month
+512 MB RAM = +$1/month
+1TB transfer = +$1/month

So we could really emphasis on what matters for our project.
Currently the smallest droplets are also - and by far - the best value/price!

Hey Guys, While we agree entirely that being able to select the exact amount of resources that you want would be great in terms of user experience it would unfortunately lead to poorer distribution of capacity on our side, which would then result in an increased price back to the customer which wouldn't be ideal. However, we do believe that there are different workloads that require different servers and hardware. For example caching services need a lot of RAM but not much else, DBs need very fast harddrives and CPU, and then there are cases when you just want a bunch of storage and not much else. This is an area that we are exploring to see if we can begin provisioning different hardware types sometime in 2014 and testing to see if customers like the ability to select a different type of VM with different combinations of underlying specs based on their workload. If anyone wants to startup a separate uservoice request for that we then upvote from there we can provide regular updates on those projects. Unfortunately however this particular request is going to be declined because we won't move to a "slider" scale where customers can dynmaically select each component individually, it would just lead to increased costs for customers. We would recommend using the best size that fits currently. Thanks!

Agree! I just need CPU, nothing else.

Yeah! Also the possibility on using regular hard drives instead of SSD!

i agree, I was recently learning mail servers, and i got a web mail interface going, but couldnt get email, turns out that 512mb ram is not enough for the mail demons plus spamassassin and clamav. I like the $5/mo droplet but needed a bit more ram. The rest of the specs were fine.

Those prices are a bit optimistic, but I would like to see something like this.

I wouldn't want to replace my SSD with a regular drive but a bit of customization would be nice. It would be very difficult to implement though. Some of the pricing listed is a bit optimistic. Realistic pricing would probably be $5/eCPU, $2/512MB RAM, $5/TB Trans, $2/10GB SSD Space.

Each application have different needs, this would greatly improve the use cases where DO can be used

I chose those prices "arbitrary" to match the current $5/month droplet, but you get the idea

This is a nice idea, although I think it may not work out for DO. Perhaps if they had the standard structure they have now with additional storage perhaps would work well I think.

I think the current pre-set structure is good, so long as there is the ability to (dynamically) extend it. Or alternatively, set a max price per droplet per month and pay as you use up to the max price (i.e., pay more for peak use, less for troughs for CPU use; pay per GB for disk, ...).

I think the price structure is unbeatable as it is, and unrealistic to assume they could charge unbundled prices that would be better overall values, so putting votes elsewhere.

I use only the $5 droplets, best value/price and hope that that wont change, however it would be nice if I could add just RAM or CPU.
add on: 512 MB RAM/$1/month would be great

I've followed your suggestion and posted the task-specific hardware request:

You could do something like AWS spot instances and offer 10-20 off for unused server capacity.
