Add UK data center

i think will be great to add UK data center , while Digital Ocean is great provides good VM's

another point , i think if there is windows server available in OS option will be great thing :)

also if there is DDoS protection for whole VM's .. will be fantastic

but in the end im happy with Digital Ocean , the speed of connection is better than other providers i have used VM's

All in all , im sure you will do your best :)

and i'm sorry for my English its not perfect

    Admin response

We're super excited to announce that we've launched our UK region, in London, today! https://www.digitalocean.com/company/blog/introducing-our-london-region/#comment-1485892873 This is our second region in EU and will provide significantly better service for UK customers as well as those customers looking to deploy locally to serve the UK market. The DC also features IPv6 and runs on our updated v1.5 backend code base that is much more stable and provides much more reliable backups and snapshotting capabilities. We are appreciative and thankful of our customers' support which allows us to expand to new geographies, as that is always very exciting. We'd love to launch additional regions this year but at the moment the other geographies that we are investigating have much more complex regulations and logistics than the EU region. Thank you, Moisey Cofounder Digitalocean

Agreed -- definitely look for a good UK option, but I imagine the pricing might be difficult considering how expensive power can be in UK DCs.

We will be adding additional datacenters in the future, but no eta on a UK facility yet.

We do have a facility in Amsterdam that can be used currently instead.

What advantage does the UK give over Amsterdam? There's less than 7 milliseconds between them....

I have a 50 mbs link from my home in Birmingham, UK, and Amsterdam provides consistently better performance on the speedtest.net servers than those situated in the same city as me.

As someone from the UK I have to disagree with this. There is no real need.
The Amsterdam data centre is perfectly fine for hosting servers that are accessed from the UK.

There will be a few ms extra on the ping but that is all, and this will likely only be minimal anyway (10-20ms or so at the worst). Pinging my server in London I get 48ms pinging my vps in Amsterdam I get 62ms for example.

I can see how this would be nice in the future if they want to expand to the UK but I wouldn't look at it with any kind of priority if I was DO.

I would love to be able to have my servers in the UK. It's not about speed, but on the data protection front, as a UK customer, I'd like UK-based servers!

The main need for a UK data centre would be for compliance with Data Protection. The main obstacle for a lot of UK businesses when considering cloud hosting is "where is my data? where are my backups? where is my replication?". If a cloud provider could guarantee that nothing in their UK datacentre is ever sent overseas without instruction or consent from the VPS owners, they would instantly solve a massive headache for a lot of small businesses!

This has previously been mentioned on the @digitalocean twitter feed and apparently plans are in place for a data center in the UK. https://twitter.com/digitalocean/status/336621186609971202

UK Data center is a must for me to make the switch. Love the website and ethos of the company, just wish you were in the UK.

A UK data center would be a major positive for me. Currently running from Amsterdam and would prefer to have my development environment closer to home. However really like the service so far. Just a shame i cant access it from work!

DATA protection compliance requires business in the UK keep data in the UK.

Data protection compliance does not require businesses in the UK to keep data in the UK, your are free to store data throughout the EEA but if you plan to store data outside the EEA then the you are required to ensure that the jurisdiction you are moving to has adequate legal protections for data subjects and their rights.

    ICO principle 8.

Amsterdam is clearly in the EEA, UK data centre would be great though but nothing to do with data protection.

It would be great to have a DC data center. As others said the law requires to keep your data inside the UK in many cases.
