It's a simple type of record, similar to CNAME, only it can point to another domain.
It's (almost) required for some DDOS protecting CDNs:
We also require this capability. Currently this is preventing us from providing smooth onboarding for our clients as we have to terminate (SSL) their TLD just to provide that redirect via a web server. This requires our client to move their TLD DNS to us, vs delegating a sub domain. How quickly are you guys planning on releasing this feature?

Is Digital Ocean even paying attention to these ideas, it's been 2 years and no response from Digital Ocean. ANAME is needed.
