Enabling Outbound Reserved IP results in loss of connectivity

I'm following the directions given on this page (link below) but each time it results in the box losing connectivity. I also can't use the web-based console to connect at this point.
I'm only able to restore access by hard-cycling the box.
This is the command being run. I'm filling in the anchor gateway IP as directed:
sudo sh -c "ip route del 0/0; ip route add default via <anchor-gateway-IP-address> dev eth0"

Hi Kyle,
We've just pushed changes to this topic that clarify the issue here with this text:
"To configure a Droplet to send its outbound traffic over a reserved IP address, you must first assign the reserved IP address to the Droplet and then obtain the Droplet's gateway anchor IP address."
