Recently, I have been planning to build an application using the Gmail API and the ChatGPT API, and I am exploring whether vector search support is available in order to implement a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) workflow.
I reached out to your support team and received the following response:
At this time, DigitalOcean’s Managed MongoDB service does not support native vector search or vector indexing. While you can store vector embeddings (for example, as arrays or binary data) within MongoDB, the managed service does not currently provide built-in vector similarity search capabilities required for efficient semantic search or RAG use cases.
With the rise of the vibe coding movement, the barrier to programming is steadily decreasing. I believe that more and more companies will choose to build their own low-cost, in-house solutions rather than rely on renting off-the-shelf services.
Given this trend, I think that if you were to introduce native vector search functionality, it would be extremely valuable and likely very well received by developers and companies building modern AI-powered applications.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Song Xu
